Description

Israel Washburn wrote his brother Elihu Washburne in Washington, D.C., relating an account by their brother Samuel Washburn, who served on the ironclad gunboat, USS Galena, during the Civil War.

Israel Washburn recounted Samuel's story about the battle of Malvern Hills near Turkey Bend, when Union General George B. McClellan was on board the USS Galena. Samuel Washburn wrote that McClellan, "came on board to save his bacon" after the Union Army of the Potomac was nearly defeated as they reached the James River near Richmond, Virginia.

As Collector of the Port of Portland, Israel Washburn also inquired about legislation for the Customs House. President Lincoln appointed Israel Washburn to this top federal job in 1863.
