Description

Born on January 30, 1833, Caroline Washburn was the youngest of 11 children born to Israel Washburn Sr. and Martha “Patty” Benjamin Washburn of Livermore. She attended the local school and furthered her education at the Waterville Liberal Institute and the Gorham Seminary.

While visiting her brother Israel Washburn in Orono, she met Freeland Salmon Holmes of Foxcroft. They married at her family home on June 3, 1857. They settled in Foxcroft where Freeland had a medical practice. They had two children, Fanny and Frank.

After the Civil War started, Freeland joined 6th Regiment of Maine volunteers, working as their surgeon. He died in service at Germantown, Virginia, on June 23, 1863.

After Freeland's death, Caroline and the children went to live in Livermore with her father. When Israel Sr. died in 1876, she first moved to Wisconsin to be near her brother Cadwallader Colden Washburn, and eventually settled in Minneapolis to be near her brother William Drew Washburn.

Caroline died in Minneapolis in 1920 and is buried in Rural Grove Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft.
