Description
Israel Washburn Jr. wrote to his brother, Elihu Washburne (Elihu added the ancestral "e" to the name Washburn), from the Revere House in Boston on July 9, 1861. Israel sought news about President Abraham Lincoln and gave his impressions of William Seward. Israel was curious about who would serve in Lincoln's Cabinet. At the time of this letter, Elihu was serving in Congress representing the state of Illinois.
Israel Washburn Jr. (1813-1883) was the eldest son of Israel and Martha "Patty" Benjamin Washburn of Livermore. It was in Orono that Israel met his first wife Mary Maud Webster. They married on October 24, 1841. Together they had four children: Israel, Ada, Charles, and Anna.
Elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1842, Israel continued his political career with his election to Congress in 1851. From 1861 to 1863 he served as Maine's Civil War Governor from 1861 to 1863.
President Lincoln appointed Israel Washburn as Collector of the Port of Portland in 1863, a position he held until 1877. Israel married his second wife, Robina Napier Brown, in 1876.
Israel Washburn died in Philadelphia on May 12, 1883 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.
