Description
Samuel Benjamin Washburn (1824-1890) left his home in Livermore at the age of 18 to become a sailor. The U.S. Navy appointed him an Acting Master in 1861 and assigned Washburn to the U.S.S. Galena, an ironclad gunboat.
Washburn was wounded in the hip when the Galena sustained fire on the James River during the Civil War battle of Drewy's Bluff (Battle of Fort Darling), near Richmond, Virginia, on May 13, 1862.
His war injury left Washburn lame for the rest of his life. He eventually moved to a sanitarium in Avon Springs, New York, to receive continued medical treatment. He died there on March 4, 1890 and is buried in Waters Hill Cemetery in Livermore.
