Description
Freeland Salmon Holmes of Foxcroft used this sword, scabbard, and belt buckle during his service in the Civil War. At the age of 33, he joined the 6th Regiment of Maine Volunteers as a surgeon.
Holmes served in Northern Virginia and died at a camp near Germantown in 1863. He left behind his wife, Caroline Ann Washburn, and two young children, Fanny and Frank.
