Description

Israel Washburn Jr. (1813-1883), of Livermore, was the first son of Israel Washburn and Martha "Patty" Benjamin Washburn.

While practicing law in Orono, he became interested in politics and was elected to the Maine legislature in 1842, as a member of the Whig party. He was elected to Congress in 1851 and became a founding member of the Republican party.

Israel served as the 29th Governor of Maine from 1861 to 1863. He declined to be nominated for a third term. He was then appointed Collector of the Port of Portland, a position he held for 14 years.

Israel had four children with his first wife, Mary Maud Webster of Orono. She died in 1873. Three years later he married Robina Napier Brown of Bangor.
