Civil War belt buckle, ca. 1862

Description

Freeland S. Holmes used this belt buckle while serving as a surgeon with the 6th Maine Regiment of Volunteers during the Civil War.

From Foxcroft, Freeland married Caroline Ann Washburn of Livermore. Caroline was the sister of Maine's Civil War governor Israel Washburn, Jr.

Freeland died in service in 1863, leaving Caroline a widow with their two children, Frank and Fanny.
