Description

Israel Washburn Jr. (1813-1883) wrote to his younger brother, Elihu Benjamin Washburne (1816-1887), while serving as 29th Governor of Maine. At the time, Elihu was serving in Congress, representing the state of Illinois.

In the letter, Israel discussed Virginia’s unjust government and how Virginia is still a slave state. He asked Elihu if Richard Yates, the Governor of Illinois, remained honorable. He also asked his brother to write to him about matters in Washington, D.C. and if President Lincoln will stand firm and preserve the government in its integrity.

Elihu Washburne, the third child of Israel and Martha Benjamin of Livermore, became a lawyer and set up a practice in Galena, Illinois. He added the ancestral “e” to the Washburn name. Elected to the U.S. House of Representative in 1852, Elihu served until 1869, so long that he became known as “Father of the House” and “Watchdog of the Treasury.” He is best known for his personal and political friendships with Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
