Description
Israel Washburn Jr. (1813-1883) was the eldest son of Israel and Martha "Patty" Benjamin Washburn. Born and raised in Livermore, he studied law with his uncle Reuel Washburn and passed the bar in Orono in 1834.
It was in Orono that Israel met his first wife Mary Maud Webster. They married on October 24, 1841, and together they had four children: Israel, Ada, Charles, and Anna.
Elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1842, Israel continued his political career with his election to Congress in 1851. From 1861 to 1863 he served as Maine's Civil War governor.
President Lincoln appointed Washburn as Collector of the Port of Portland in 1863, a position he held until 1877. Israel married his second wife, Robina Napier Brown, in 1876.
Israel died in Philadelphia on May 12, 1883 and is buried at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor.
