Civil War bullet, Bethel, ca. 1860


This three-ringed bullet, shot from a long rifle, was surgically removed from the side of Daniel Martin Stearns (b. Nov. 24, 1839) of Bethel twenty years after he was wounded by it during the Civil War at the Battle of Antietam.

Stearns was mustered into Company I, Fifth Maine Volunteers, January 4, 1862. He received the bullet wound on May 3, 1863, and was transferred to the First Maine Veterans.
