James Goff affidavit on Ebenezer Cole pension request, Danville, ca. 1848

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

James Goff of Danville, age 88, signed a deposition stating that he was a corporal and sergeant in Capt. Drew's company in 1779, along with Sgt. Ebenezer Cole of North Yarmouth or Falmouth.

Goff apparently was supporting a pension claim of Cole's widow. The affidavit itself may have been written from Goff's testimony.

The affidavit states, "He and I were intimate together, being both of us under officers and also both of us being singers, we often met evenings and practiced singing together."

Cole apparently died at sea many years previous to the affadavit.
