Freeland Salmon Holmes, Foxcroft, ca. 1862

Description

Freeland Salmon Holmes was born to Salmon and Abigail Blake Holmes on September 8, 1827 in Foxcroft. Freeland was a graduate of Bowdoin College and married Caroline Washburn of Livermore on June 3, 1857 after which they lived in Foxcroft. He was commissioned as a surgeon to the 6th Regiment of Maine Volunteers in July of 1861 at the age of 33. He died in service from diphtheria near Germantown, Virginia on June 23, 1863. He is buried at Rural Grove Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft.
