Description
The Norcross Transportation Company steamboat Rainbow pulls away from Norcross wharf, heading up North Twin Lake with a load of passengers and their gear, including at least 8 canoes.
The company operated a small fleet of boats providing freight hauling and passenger service on the lakes of the upper West Branch of the Penobscot River from about 1900-1940. At the peak of the company's business, 1900-1920, the Rainbow was called the "queen of the fleet."
The largest and most powerful of the boats owned by the Norcross Transportation Company, she was 65 feet in length, with an 18 foot. beam. Rainbow was taken out of service in 1922.
