Description

The Portland Housing Authority completed Franklin Towers, a high-rise apartment building in Portland that serves seniors and others in need, in 1969.

The City of Portland built Franklin Towers as part of a "Slum Clearance" project in the late 1950s and 1960s. Projects like Franklin Towers and the low-income complex of Bayside Park (later Kennedy Park), replaced entire neighborhoods and privately owned houses.

Dwarfed by the 16-story building at the corner of Franklin Street and Cumberland Avenue is the abandoned Bas HaKnesses Anshe Sfard Synagogue, just visible in this image to the left and behind the towers. The synagogue was built in 1917 and last used in the 1950s. It was torn down in 1983.
