Fire-Wards of Portland warnings, 1818

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

In a document dated January 6, 1818, the Portland fire wardens urged the "vigilance and carefulness" of Portland residents "at all times" to protect the safety of the town and prevent fires.

Various precautions and warnings were detailed, including not carrying lighted candles or lamps -- without protective lanterns -- into barns and stables, and reading in bed by candle light.

The document is signed by C. B. Brooks, chairman.
