Longfellow Garden Club tree planting, Portland, 1957

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Members of the Longfellow Garden Club plant a hawthorn tree in the garden behind the Wadsworth-Longfellow House on Congress Street in Portland.

The club began in 1924 to restore and maintain the gardens behind the house that Peleg Wadsworth built for his family in 1785-1786. Wadsworth's daughter Zilpah and her husband, Stephen Longfellow, raised their family in the house. Among their offspring was poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Anne Longfellow Pierce gave the house and grounds to the Maine Historical Society when she died in 1901.
