Description
This image shows the east side of Main Street. The three story building in the center is the Berry and Cobb Block, built in 1872 by John T. Berry and Francis Cobb. The Berry and Cobb Block was often called the Masonic Block because Masonic meetings were held on the third floor from 1873 until the Masonic Temple was built in 1911. When the photo was taken in 1875 the first floor was occupied by Cobb, Wight & Norton Ship Stores & Groceries, A. Ross Weeks Crockery & Glassware, and the Eastern Express Co. The building on the left is the Custom House Block, built in 1853. When the Custom House moved out the building was known as the G.A.R Hall. The building on the right is the Wilson and White Block, built in 1856 by Captain William Wilson and Jonathan White, a lime manufacturer. It was also know as Phoenix Hall because of the large hall on the third floor.
