About This Exhibit

This four-part exhibit is based on an exhibit entitled “Out of the Archives: Westbrook Seminary Women,” which was featured at the University of New England’s Portland Campus Aplanalp Library, in conjunction with the symposium “Women in the Archives: Using Archival Collections in Research and Teaching on U.S. Women,” during the summer of 2009.

This series of exhibits draws on the work and research of students in an archives-central, American women’s history class taught by UNE Professor Elizabeth De Wolfe.

Roberta C. Gray, Reference & Instruction Librarian, University of New England, who is in charge of the Westbrook College History Collection, put the exhibit together and did some of the research.

The students whose research and work on the individual students contributed to the exhibit are: Amanda Barton, a dental hygiene student who researched Zelia A. Lunt; Jennifer L. Stenberg, a nursing student, who researched Julia S. Quinby; Shelley Rawson, a dental hygiene student who researched Helen F. Spaulding; and Suzanne Bruen, a nursing student who researched Alice B. Ricker.

Joyce K. Bibber, historian & author, University of Southern Maine, and author of Westbrook College Campus, contributed to the research.
