Ogunquit Beach Sonnet

A story by Shannon Schooley from 2002

I wrote this sonnet when I was 12 years old for a school assignment. I like it because it represents the innocent and hopeful perspective of a child before he/she enters "the real world." It still makes me smile when I read it years later, because it makes me remember the pure joy I felt as a child when I spent a day at the beach with my family.

I hope reading it will inspire you to recall some of your favorite childhood memories.

Ogunquit Beach

Sand castles fall as waves crash with white foam
As the seaweed has washed upon my feet
And a cool salty breeze blows as I roam
I’ll ponder the creatures I hope to meet
And collecting snails, crabs, and mussel shells
Walking on pebbles on the beach of sand
I would listen to St. Mary’s church bells
Swimming in the river I’ll look at the land
And watching the water of green and blue
River and waves meet as waves turn to white
The seagulls and fish will want to watch too
Above the rocks the sun is shining bright
Looking at the beach that isn’t so plain
Thinking of the times in Ogunquit, Maine.
