Pvt. John Sheahan of the 1st Maine Cavalry wrote to his father in Dennysville, June 10, 1863 from a camp near Warrenton Junction, Virginia, describing the Battle of Brandy Station. Sheahan called it "the great cavalry fight" and told his father it "was the most horrid thing that I ever saw dead horses and men lay strewn all over the field and the air was filled with iorn hail..."
