Description
Mary Thompson of New Bern, North Carolina, a town that was held by the Union forces throughout the Civil War, wrote to Lt. John P. Sheahan about the post war changes in the town.
She reported that her friends and familiar people were returning and referred to the "glorious news" that N.C. had returned to the Union.
Thompson met Sheahan when he and Maj. Charles Lynch traveled through the town after they escaped from a Confederate prison in Columbia, South Carolina, in late 1864.
