Description

Lt. John P. Sheahan of the 31st Maine Infantry wrote to his father in Dennysville asking him to send $40 in gold "immediately." It was the second time Sheahan had made the request, but his father apparently had not received the letters. Sheahan, who had been held prisoner since the end of July 1864, had already made a plan to escape. He instructed his father in how to acquire and send the gold and other items, including pants, shirts, stockings, and a blanket. He suggested his father send two boxes as "one or the other will be likely to reach me."
