Description
John P. Sheahan, 1st lieutenant of Co. E, 31st Maine Infantry, on Oct. 25, 1864, wrote an affidavit stating his intention to escape from Camp Sorgum. He had been held prisoner in Virginia and South Carolina since the end of July.
The statement, witnessed by two fellow prisoners, gave control of any letters and packages sent to Sheahan after his escape to Capt. Chauncey O. Noyes, commander of Co. D of the 31st Maine.
On the reverse is a statement from Noyes returning the affidavit to Sheahan in June 1865.
