Description
John P. Sheahan, 1st Lieutenant in Co. E, 31st Maine Infantry, wrote to his father from Richland Prison (Camp Sorgum) in Columbia, South Carolina.
Sheahan was taken prisoner at the end of July during the Battle of the Crater. He had written repeatedly to his father in Dennysville, telling him he was well and giving him instructions of how to write to him. Lt. Sheahan wrote that he had not heard from home in the two months he had been held, so he assumed they had not received his letters or he theirs.
He wrote, "I am still in the very best of health and spirits in fact I have never enjoyed better health than I now have."
