Description
John Sheahan, who was about to be discharged from the 1st Maine Cavalry in Virginia to take a commission as a 1st lieutenant in the 31st Maine Infantry, wrote to his father in Dennysville about how his father managed to get him "so good a chance."
Sheahan was about to return to Maine to join the 31st, which was organized in March and April 1864. His younger brother Ned joined the same regiment and Sheahan was concerned about being an officer in a unit where his sibling served.
