Pvt. John Sheahan on possible promotion, 1863

Description
Pvt. John Sheahan of the 1st Maine Cavalry wrote to his father, John, in Dennysville about the regiment's march through Pennsylvania and the fresh food they were given. He also said he was "highly praised for my conduct in the late cavalry fights" and that he expected to be promoted. "I did not know that I could stand fire so well I never felt so gay in my life as I did when we charged with the sabre at Brandy Station," he wrote.
