Red Cross volunteers pose in front of Portland's Union Station during World War I. The apron-style uniform, also known as a "washable uniform," was worn by support-staff volunteers. Support and workroom volunteers assisted with duties such as the preparation of medical supplies, and managing donations. Their uniform style was similar to other support volunteers, like canteen (food service)workers, but it differed from nurse uniforms.
All volunteers were required to wear the veil (headdress) during service.
