Training and Workshops
Training provided by MHS is designed to prepare participants to develop the skills and capacity needed to contribute to Maine Memory Network effectively. It is based on the practices, policies, and guidelines that have been developed to support Maine Memory over the past decade.
Training emphasizes:
- clear and consistent guidelines for digitizing collections and presenting them online;
- rigorous standards of historical practice;
- sound project planning, collaboration, and outreach; and
- providing the broadest possible access to your collections, online exhibits, and community's history.
Workshops are targeted and open to MMN Contributing Partners, MMN grant recipients, and new organizations—historical societies, libraries, schools, and other community organizations—that would like to get involved. Participation in workshops is free but registration is required. Space is limited.
Workshops are led by MHS staff who have extensive experience working with Maine organizations and communities. The MHS training team includes professional historians, archivists, technology experts, educators, program staff, and veteran MMN contributors from around Maine.

21st Century Skills Workshops
In recent years, "21st Century Skills" has emerged as a useful framework for defining the skills that Americans need to be successful in an era increasingly defined by information and technology. For more information on the subject generally, please see Local History, Technology, and 21st Century Skills. These skills include collaboration, communication, and use of technology, as well as civic and media literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and global awareness. Museums, libraries, and schools can leverage their participation in Maine Memory Network to promote the development of these skills within their organizations and communities.
The following workshops are designed to introduce librarians, teachers, and representatives of historical organizations to ways that Maine Memory can help them develop their own professional skills, increase the capacity and effectiveness of their organizations, and become catalysts in their communities. Workshops focus on sound project planning, including clarifying goals for their own local history activities, reaching out to and working with local partners, and identifying appropriate, achievable next steps.
Workshops are generally three hours long, half-day, held regionally, and offered several times each year. There are no fees but registration is required. To register, fill in the Skills Workshops Registration Form (PDF) and return to us. Questions? Contact Larissa Vigue Picard, MHS Community Partnership Coordinator, at lvpicard@mainehistory.org or 774-1822.
