Launch of the 'Doris Hamlin'

The Doris Hamlin, a four-masted schooner built at the Frye-Flynn Shipyard in Harrington, was one of the last vessels launched there, marking the decline of a once vigorous shipbuilding industry in Washington County.

South Portland's Wartime Shipbuilding

Two shipyards in South Portland, built quickly in 1941 to construct cargo ships for the British and Americans, produced nearly 270 ships in two and a half years. Many of those vessels bore the names of notable Mainers.

Canoes, Schooners and the Down-Easter

Maine has a long history of boat and ship-building, spurred by the timber resources and the many sheltered ports along the coast. Shipping and trade were especially important in Maine in the 19th century.

Scarborough: They Called It Owascoag

The history of a 350+-year-old city south of Portland, the Scarborough site was constructed by representatives from Scarborough Historical Society, Scarborough Middle School, and Scarborough Public Library. Exhibits include the marsh, transportation and roads, shipyards and shipwrecks, clamming and lobstering, famous residents, and education.

An introduction to Hampden history as presented by students from Reeds Brook Middle School, the Edythe L. Dyer Community Library, and Hampden Historical Society. Areas focused on include early settlement, expansion, Riverside Park, Hampden Academy, important residents, shipyards, the War of 1812, and more.

Biddeford History & Heritage Project

Highlights of Biddeford history presented by McArthur Public Library, Biddeford Historical Society, and Biddeford High School’s Project ASPIRE class. The site explores shipbuilding, the Civil War homefront, women’s clubs, influential residents, and some of the city’s famous artists and inventors.
