Maine Community Heritage Project: Local Benefits
Partnership on local history projects can benefit individuals and organizations throughout the Community. Through this pilot program, we are developing models, resources, and the technical infrastructure within Maine Memory that will help schools, historical organizations, and libraries partner, explore the history of their community, and share that history online.
Historical Societies:
- receive help caring for, digitizing, interpreting, and sharing their collections on the Web;
- develop close working partnerships with local schools;
- increase statewide awareness of their organization and about their community's history;
- increase access to their collections;
- play a prominent role in a visible community project; and
- attract new members and younger, more diverse audiences.
Students:
- learn about the history of their community;
- learn to do research, handle, interpret, and catalog historical material;
- conduct interviews, create exhibits, and develop related projects;
- develop research, writing, technology, and personal communication skills;
- achieve academic goals and key learning results;
- work with people of all ages throughout their community;
- provide valuable service to local organizations; and
- create resources that teachers, students, and other people throughout their community and
- beyond will use to learn about the history of their town.
Community Teams:
- establish ongoing, substantive partnerships between local schools and community organizations;
- increase awareness of and share the history of their town with people in their community, and across the state and country;
- participate in a nationally–recognized initiative and pilot program that will be replicated across Maine.
