Description

This photograph, taken around 1915, shows Walter Wotton (1864-1940) standing in the doorway the Jameson & Wotton store in Friendship. William Jameson, the grandson of Wotton's partner, Sherman Jameson, remembers him fondly in his journal "as a big jovial man on the edge of being fat. He was bald and had a great personality for meeting the public."

He was also a very astute business man.The store catered to both the local residents and the fishermen on islands in Muscongus Bay. A combination grocery, dry goods, and marine store, it became the commercial hub of Friendship.
