Contributed by Maine State Archives

Description

The Maine State Sanatorium Association for the Prevention and Treatment of Tuberculosis sent a letter to physicians in June 1913, explaining what the purposes and practices of the Maine State Sanatorium in Hebron, which the group oversaw.

Because of criticism about the Sanatorium's costs and treatment methods, the association sent the letter to explain funding and costs and to encourage doctors to visit the facility.

The Sanatorium in Hebron opened in 1904 and was the first such facility in the state. In 1915, the state took over operation of the Sanatorium.
