Do I have to register to use Maine Memory Network? Why should I register?

You are not required to register in order to search the site, and you can access all the images in the Maine Memory Network without an account. When you log in, however, your free user account allows you to save images in albums, create exhibits, save searches, and email groups of images to friends and colleagues.

Why register? Registration allows you to access the "My Album" tools on the website – your personal place to save images to return to later, make online slideshows, and email groups of images to friends and colleagues. The information in your albums is private. Only you can choose to share your albums. Find out more about the My Album tool.

Do I need to register and login before I can search?

No, you do not have to register to search the site. However, registering is free, and your account will allow you to save images to your personal album, e-mail images to friends and colleagues, and to create your own personal digital albums.

What is an Album (called My Album) ?

Save your favorite images from a search in an album. The images in your album become your personal collection at the Maine Memory Network. It is easy to add, delete, read details and magnify images while viewing your album. You can create as many albums as you need.

Saving images in your album saves you time on your return visits. An album allows you to view a pre-selected group of images and show them to a teacher, student, friend, co-worker, editor or art director. With an album you can also create online slideshow stories.

You will need to register for an account to create an album, so we can save your items and albums for you.

I found an image I really like. Can I use it on my own website?

Except for classroom educational use, you may not copy an image off this website or use it without the permission of the contributing organization. Read our policies. The Maine Historical Society will prosecute the theft of images from this site.

I found a picture that I would like to have a copy of. How can I order a reproduction?

If that image is available for sale, it will appear on www.VintageMaineImages.com. Check that site first. Otherwise call our Image Services Coordinator at (207) 774-1822.

I am writing a book about Maine history. How can I get permission to use some of your images?

Most images on this website are available to purchase as prints or scans for publication on www.VintageMaineImages.com. Your Maine Memory Network password will work on that website, which is also maintained by the Maine Historical Society.

Viewing transcriptions of handwritten documents found in the Maine Memory Network may require the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free.
