Caleb Strong, Massachusetts, ca. 1810 / Maine Historical Society

Chapter 4, page 112.

Strong was governor of Massachusetts during the War of 1812, when Massachusetts failed to provide military support to Maine.

Many Mainers felt disconnected from Massachusetts as a result, serving to strengthen the movement for Maine statehood.

While statehood did not come until 1820, the seeds of the movement were sown in the early days of the new republic.

Friends of Separation from Massachusetts were concerned in 1816 about the outcome of the vote for statehood.

Authors of the letter complain of their opposition's "unwearied pains to mislead the public minds."

An 1816 letter describes Bethel's vote for delegates to Maine's constitutional convention.

It notes that a "legal meeting" occurred, people who were "qualified" to vote voted, and a delegate was elected.

This regimental flag was created for the Maine State Militia about 1822.

It utilizes the seal of the State of Maine, which achieved independent statehood in 1820.
