Letter concerning military provisions and garrison contingents, Kittery, 1695 / Maine Historical Society
Chapter 3, page 75-77.
Charles Frost's letter describes holdings of military stores at Kittery, York and Wells in 1694. The small amount of stores on hand contributed to the vulnerability of Maine's frontier settlements.
This letter was written in February when there was no chance for the English colonists to replenish their supplies. Food that they had grown the previous summer was probably running out and they were not yet familiar with how to efficiently farm the land in Maine or take advantage of the food that grew wild.
As hostility between the English and the Wabaakis grew, there were fewer opportunites to obtain food through trade.
