Strong was governor of Massachusetts during the War of 1812, when Massachusetts failed to provide military support to Maine.
Many Mainers felt disconnected from Massachusetts as a result, serving to strengthen the movement for Maine statehood.
While statehood did not come until 1820, the seeds of the movement were sown in the early days of the new republic.
