Tramp steamer WINIFRED, 1898

Description

Photograph of WINIFRED when new in 1898, just built by Bath Iron Works.

She was the first tramp freighter built in the U.S.

Steel hull, propeller, triple-expansion steam engine, 2,456 gross tons, register length 281'. A tramp freighter takes cargoes wherever they need to go rather than operating between two ports.

WINIFRED's first owners were Miller, Bull and Knowlton of New York; she was retired in 1936.
