Description

Film excerpt of model airplane flying meet held at Portland Municipal Airport, which the city purchased in 1937 and expanded with WPA funds.

Model airplane building was popular in the 1930s. It was seen as a way to prepare young men for flying.

National organizations held meets where participants competed in different classes to see how long their plane could stay aloft. The planes were large, free-flying models with no remote controls. The rudders were set to guide the plane in a circle.

In the film cars are visible in a parking lot along Westbrook Street in Stroudwater.

The film was taken ca. 1940 by the Portland Engraving Company for the city of Portland.
