Description
Transfer card issued to Frank W. Pearce by GAR, Frank Hunter Post # 68 in 1889, entitled Pearce to transfer to any other Grand Army of the Republic Post within one year.
Membership in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was strictly limited to veterans of the American Civil War. Established in 1866 to foster the camaraderie that developed among the troops, the GAR numbered over 400,000 members by the 1890's and became a powerful political and social force promoting veterans' welfare. The last GAR member, Albert Woolson, died in 1956.
