Membership in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was strictly limited to veterans of the American Civil War. Established in 1866 to foster the camaraderie that developed among the troops, the GAR numbered over 400,000 members by the 1890's and became a powerful political and social force promoting veterans' welfare.
