Description
Anne Longfellow Pierce, sister of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, lived in the family home on Congress Street (then called Back Street) for eighty-seven of her ninety years. She was married in 1832 to George Washington Pierce, but moved back to the family home when he died in 1835.
Anne left the Wadsworth-Longfellow house to the Maine Historical Society upon her death in 1901. This is a copy of the list that Anne prepared before her death, designating some items to be given to family members or friends, and that the remainder of the items would be left with the House. As a condition of her bequest, certain items were required to be left always in the location that they had been during Henry's residence there.
