Description
Peleg Wadsworth, 1748-1826 was a general in the American Revolutionary War and served in Congress. During the Revolution he commanded troops in what is referred to as the Penobscot Expedition to remove British troops from Fort George at Castine.
The attempt was a failure. Wadsworth was one of the few officers to emerge with an enhanced reputation. Later he was put in command of the defense of all Maine from the Piscataqua to the St. Croix.
He was captured by the British in 1781, but escaped. He lived in Falmouth (now Portland) and was grandfather to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
