Description
Eunice Day, mother of Lucretia Day Sewall, was quite ill in Portland and her daughter was unable to get out of wartime Mobile, Alabama, to see her. Eunice Day died about a month after her son-in-law, Kiah B. Sewall wrote a letter to his son, Somers, who was in Portland with Eunice Day, about why the family could not get to Maine.
He wrote, "No permits are granted for anyone to leave the country." He added that there were battles at "all the points of egress. I am exceedingly pained that your mother cannot come on - but so it is."
Sewall also told his son he had no way to send him any money. "We trust there may be a change soon. We are in a sad condition. God only knows when it will end."
