Kiah Sewall letter to son, daughter, Mobile, 1850

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Kiah B. Sewall, a Maine native who was a lawyer in Mobile, Alabama, wrote to his son Sewall, almost 7 years old; and his daughter Lucretia (Kitty), almost 5.

The two children, along with their mother, Lucretia Day Sewall, and other siblings, were in Portland with their mother's family.

Sewall mentioned that he had not seen Somers for a year and 19 days. Lucretia Sewall and children Eunice, then 11; Ellen, then 9; and Somers, young Lucretia, and Abby, then a year old, left Mobile by steamer in May 1849.

All of the children except Eunice were born in Mobile after the family moved there in 1839. Some of the children were in Maine frequently to attend school, and their mother often returned in the summers.
