Description
Kiah B. Sewall, who was living in New York studying law and working to get out of debt, wrote to his father-in-law, Ezekiel Day of Portland, asking for a loan of $250-300 to travel to Florida or Cuba for his health.
Sewall had recently suffered what he described as a lung hemorrhage and wrote that his doctor suggested he go south until spring.
Sewall's wife, Lucretia Day Sewall, and their 17-month-old daughter, Eunice, lived with Ezekiel and Eunice Day in Portland.
Sewall wrote that Day had last loaned him money a year ago and that since that time he had been able to pay his expenses.
He wrote, "I have as yet no cough - but it is only by bleedings, blisterings & daily doeses of Digitalis that I keep it off -- "
