Admiral Henry Knox Thatcher

Contributed by The General Henry Knox Museum

Description

This ambrotype pictures Henry Knox Thatcher, a grandson of General Henry Knox. He was born May 26, 1806 at Montpelier, his grandfather's estate in Thomaston, Maine. Inspired by his grandfather, Thatcher pursued a military career by joining the navy in 1823 and obtained the rank of rear admiral a few years before his retirement in 1870. He married Susan Cony Croswell of Mercer, Maine in December of 1931. When he inherited Montpelier from his mother, Lucy Flucker Knox Thatcher, in 1854, he arranged to sell the estate to James Creighton. Montpelier was razed 16 years later to make way for the Knox and Lincoln Railroad. Thatcher died outside of Boston in 1870.
