K.B. Sewall on sale of land, New York, 1836

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Writing to his wife of five months, Kiah B. Sewall explained that he had sold some of his land while in New York and expected to sell more, then to pass through Portland on his way to "exploring."

Sewall, an 1829 Bowdoin College graduate, had lost money in land speculation before his marriage in May 1836 to Lucretia Day of Portland. After their honeymoon, she returned to Portland and he stayed in New York, trying to become established in business and settle debts.

He pleaded with her not to tell anyone of his planned return to Maine.
