Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Kiah Baily Sewall of Edgecomb, an 18-year-old student at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, wrote to his eldest brother, Rufus Sewall, about the death of their father, the Rev. Samuel Sewall.

K.B. Sewall was the youngest child of Samuel Sewall and Abigail Trask Sewall. The Rev. Sewall became a preacher in 1800. He had become a missionary at the Isle of Shoals in 1824. He died in Rye, New Hampshire.

The younger Sewall wrote of his faith and the state of religion on the Bowdoin College campus. He said he had not seen his father in more than a year and a half, but saw his mother and sister when they were on their way back to Edgecomb with his father's body.
