Description
"I think I shall get along pretty well," Lucretia Day Sewall wrote to her husband about an unnamed upcoming event -- the birth of their first child. "The case afterwards, if things should go well will be a good deal for me - I am so unused to children -"
She was living in Portland with her parents and her husband, Kiah B. Sewall was in New York trying to make his way in business. They were married in May 1836 and began living apart in April 1837, apparently because of their lack of income and her pregnancy.
Sewall, an 1829 graduate of Bowdoin College, had been involved in speculation in Portland after his graduation, and apparently lost money.
