Kiah Sewall on business, books, New York, 1836

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Kiah Sewall wrote to his wife, Lucretia Day Sewall, from New York where he was trying to engage business prospects and get out from under debts incurred by land speculation.

The couple had only married about three months earlier and Lucretia was in Portland. She had asked him what books she should read and he responded, "Read, my Dear, just what your fancy suggests."

He also asked that she not repeat that his business prospects were "by no means bright," because that could change at any time.
