"Rex," Norcross wharf, ca. 1930

Contributed by Norcross Heritage Trust

Description

The Rex was a gasoline powered boat originally used on the Maine coast. It was 26 feet in length with an enclosed cabin for passenger transport. Rex was the last boat in service for the Norcross Transportation Company.

Brothers Albert and Frederick Fowler founded the Norcross Transportation Company around 1900. The company boomed from 1900-1920, transporting people to and from the numerous sporting camps, as well as ferrying supplies and equipment for the logging and paper companies located along the lakes of upper West Branch of the Penobscot River.

This photograph was taken at the wharf on North Twin Lake, Norcross, with an annotation indicating the passengers are about to embark on a picnic.
